The hill towns of Tuscany are even lovelier than imagined, and an excursion to the region deserves at least a week. Sight-see, wine taste, truffle hunt and eat to your heart's content.
The countryside is dotted with hill towns, each charming and unique in it's own way. Volterra, the city of Alabaster, is an off the beaten path, yet no less worthy hill town destination. Known for the still standing fortress surrounding the high street and square, visitors can walk the ramparts for epic views (for a small fee). History buffs can visit remains of the city's Etruscan origins and Roman amphitheater, and appreciators of sculpture will enjoy visiting the town's Alabaster shops, ecomuseum and artist studio. If that isn't enough to make this hill town a must see on your Tuscan adventure, take into consideration that Volterra is also the inspirational setting of the Twilight series. Come on a full moon, and see if the town lives up to your Twilight imagination.
